The Posts: Shia Labeouf vibes, new anime filter and Vin Diesel's new song
with a little Da Vinki
This is the first of a collaboration between Whitney and Luis to summarize and talk about the content we’ve seen on the internet in recent days.
Two Things from this week:
Shia Labeouf vibing
Last week a bunch of A-list celebrities got together to do a livestreamed table read of Fast Times at Ridgemont High and while not a single part of that sentence captured my attention at the time, the next day I still found myself completely obsessed with what I apparently missed. Not because of the movie or any of the original cast showing up but because of actual cannibal Shia Labeouf. I refreshed twitter all day searching for more clips and memes of Shia from the table reading (here’s a video highlight of Shia’s scenes). I couldn’t get enough of him hotboxing in his truck while the biggest celebrities in the world worked in the zoom boxes around him.
These clips and pictures made their way across the internet and seemed to especially resonate with bruh girls, stoners, and those who have also found themselves drawn more and more to Robert Pattinson’s brand of chaotic white boy (not to be mistaken with the more traditional white boy of the month which Pattinson can also lay claim to). The screenshots of Shia have found their way into reaction photo folders across the country and will no doubt make steady appearances as 2020 marches on.
New anime filter
On Tuesday, Snapchat released a new anime filter that has brought attention once again to the castaway app. Put any face in front of it and the filter will turn it into an anime character. The filter will also reveal if you have, as Vice’s Gita Jackson put it, “main character energy.”Like any good anime, there’s the main character and there are the more generic-looking secondary characters. Yu-Gi-Oh is probably the best example of this.
The main character is the mf with the red, black and yellow hair and a fucking pyramid on his chest.
Dragon Ball Z also kinda does this.
It’s definitely Chiaotzu
The filter tends to give more “main character” features to white people with straight hair but that’s nothing new. Programmers continue to struggle to make algorithms that can recognize Black faces the way they do white faces. A lot of women are also finding that they have “protagonist’s-mom-who-dies-energy” and some are finding that they have...other energy.
You know that if the criteria is white and straight hair there is one man that has that main character energy.
The algorithm can even anime-fy some pets and memes.
Overall, the filter is pretty sick and, despite its racial flaws. But it still doesn’t beat the NIGHTMARE-PIPPAPEG filter.
A few more things
Vin Diesel put out a song and debuted it on Kelly Clarkson’s show
Eat the Rich but make it wa(h)p
Mario and Luigi, grown soft on gold coins and direct patronage from a monarchy, have long since lost touch with their working class roots. Waluigi holds a mirror up to them, exposing their hypocrisy, and for this he is despised. An extremely detailed 2018 Waluigi render shows that the "Γ" emblem on his hat is a sticker, as a corner is peeling off. This suggests that unlike Mario, Luigi and Wario, who have tailored caps, Waluigi was only able to afford a cap with a blank emblem that he customized himself. https://t.co/sGFtoe38BpSupper Mario Broth @MarioBrothBlogIf you see people talking about Da Vinki it’s because of these two wrestler bros. Even that Late Late Show dude is talking about it.
They’re testing a life-sized Gundam and you know who it’s going to be for.
I asked you to make them MEATer 😧
The video has also become a new Tik Tok format. Here’s a One Direction version
If you were around for Vine (or the even better YouTube Vine compilations), you know the Zack Stop clip.
It’s a classic. Some background on it, apparently there was a homicide and this guy (Zack) was briefly stopped for questioning. Seeing an opportunity, they shot the first part of the video of him doing his leg thing and then added the police shot after. This is a recreation of that Vine but with a chicken. Here’s a better version of it with the audio overlay
One last thing
There're these dudes on TikTok whose whole shtick is to kind of dance around while chanting a tune that goes “hot chicken, tell me what you’re missing, kiss another man while I’m working in the kitchen.” It usually starts out as a whisper that gets louder as it’s repeated, often with some loud rhythmic banging from one of the chanters in the last few repetitions of the chant. Sometimes pets are involved.
I love these clips because they’re the right mix of stupid and chaotic but what I didn’t know was that the chant was created by Eric Andre during an interview with Jack Black, which just makes it better.
